Working with Sand Trays

Katia trained as an Integrative Arts Psychotherapist and is a HCPC registered Art

Therapist. She is experienced in using the sand tray therapeutically with both children and

adults, particularly with individuals who have survived traumatic childhoods. She has

worked in the NHS, in primary schools and in the charity sector, including Counselling

You may already use the sand tray in your work with clients and would like an opportunity

to share good practice, or you may lack confidence using the sand tray and would like to

give it a go. However experienced, or not, you are welcome to join an experiential

workshop that aims to support your work with individual adult clients.

Aims of the day

Combining discussion around theory and practice as well as hands-on-experience, we will

take time to reflect on:

  • The Invitation: how we introduce the sand tray to clients; what prompts the use of a sand

tray; when and how we invite clients to use the sand tray

  • Engagement: what we observe in the client’s process of using the sand tray; what we

notice about the image in the sand tray; directive/non-directive facilitation; how we use

the sand tray to support or challenge a client; how the image might be developed;

recording sand tray work and its use in reviewing the counselling process; the sand tray

in (self) supervision

  • Contraindications: when not to use or offer the sand tray

Please bring an issue/incident/situation/dream that you would feel comfortable sharing

during experiential sand tray sessions. You may also wish to bring a camera with you to

record any images you create and any notes we collate as a group.

You will receive a certificate for 6 hours CPD

Fees:  £40 for Counselling Plus Counsellors

          £60 for all other attendees
